Todd McLeay
Chief Executive Officer
Todd was appointed Smart’s new CEO on 1 July 2019 and specialises in helping organisations optimise their performance in times of change.
His philosophy is that business should focus on delivering effortless experiences to customers. He has previously held sales and marketing leadership roles at Vodafone and NZ Post, was CEO of Lotto NZ and ran an integrated digital design and advertising group.
Michael Mole
Chief Financial Officer
Michael joined Smart in 2022 as Group CFO to bring an Enterprise wide view to Finance following the merger of Earthcare and Smart. Michael has held senior finance roles in operationally focused businesses for 10 years, understanding the importance of close relationships between Operations and Finance. Michael is responsible for Finance and IT platforms, bringing together key support functions for optimal operational outcomes.
Benjamin Day
General Manager – Operations – MBA, MPhil, BAv
Ben has joined Smart Environmental in early 2017 after a decade in senior roles within local government. His last role was as Deputy Chief Executive of the Thames-Coromandel District Council. Ben leads the Auckland kerbside contracts and the Digital and Marketing Teams at Smart Environmental. He is a member of the Senior Management Team and also undertakes projects to mobilise contracts and improve business and customer outcomes.

Blair Griffiths
General Manager – Relationships & Growth – MBA, PGDM
Blair has over 24 years experience in infrastructure contracting and has worked on open space contracts in New Zealand, United Kingdom and America. He is a strong relationship builder, who strives to find the best solutions for clients, the community and the environment. Blair as a member of the company’s Senior Management Team, is responsible for leading the development and execution of Smart Environmental’s long term Municipal Growth and Partnership Strategies.
Jonny Dick
General Manager – Fleet & Systems Manager
Jonny joined Smart Environmental in 2017 looking after our Tasman operations. Following this role he soon moved north to mobilise and lead our Tauranga City Council kerbside glass contract. Jonny now manages Smarts fleet procurement and and digital systems driving innovation, compliance and operational efficiency
Yuri Schokking
National Resource Recovery Manager – B.Eng
Yuri oversees Smart’s Resource Recovery operations including five Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) across our network. Before this role, Yuri was the Upper South Island Regional Manager. Yuri has a BE (Forestry) and has significant senior management experience including management of up to several hundred staff and contractors. He has very strong operational, compliance, logistical and technical skills.
Mike Savage
Operations Support Manager
Mike has decades of experience in the waste and logistics industries and is one of our most experienced Managers. Mike has also worked for Envirowaste and Manco Engineering.
David Fraser
Health and Safety Assurance Manager
Dave joined Smart Environmental in 2016 looking after our Rotorua operations. He then moved into the HSE team becoming a certified heavy transport driving instructor and QA assessor.
Hendrik Pretorius
Auckland Area 1 Manager
Hendrik oversees Northern Auckland operations at Smart Environmental, leveraging his extensive background in operations and logistics.
Tim Atkinson
Auckland Area 2 and 3 Manager
Tim is a qualified heavy transport driver instructor, imparting valuable skills and knowledge to the Auckland Western and Central operations. In 2023 Tim successfully spearheaded the first zones of municipal food waste collections in Auckland City Council.

North Waikato Area Manager
Riki leads the team in North Waikato services and management of our Municipal contract.
Riki has held a variety of management and supervisory roles and has vast experience in building teams, and delivering to his objectives.
Rodney Barribal
Central Commercial Area Manager
Rodney Barriball is an experienced environmental professional with a decade of expertise in the waste industry. His notable career at Smart Environmental includes successful management of parks and reserves contracts, transfer stations, kerbside collections, and commercial operations. With strong leadership skills, Rodney excels in coordinating teams and maintaining productive relationships with stakeholders
Carole Pepperell
Rotorua Area Manager
Carole has recently joined the Smart Team and is responsible for the Rotorua District council operations.
Carole held senior management roles with Avis/Budget and has a strong focus on customer experience, and operational efficiency.
Mike Mayo
Hawkes Bay Area Manager
Mike leads the teams in the wider Hawkes Bay including Wairoa, Napier, Hastings, Central Hawkes Bay and Tararua providing Municipal contract and commercial services, The contracts also involves the handling, processing and planning of logistics for recyclables.
Mike has held senior roles with Carter Holt Harvey and brings many years of operations management experience.
Tim Hodgson
Upper South Island Area Manager
Tim’s primary objective at Smart is to manage and grow all company business interest in the Upper South Island, while also maintaining oversight of his previously managed area of the Manawatu/Rangitikei districts. Tim has been with Smart Environmental since 2010. Prior to this Tim worked in operational and intelligence analysis roles within NZ Police and Ministry of Fisheries for over 15 years. He is also a trade qualified engineer and builder. Tim has strong organisational and leadership qualities with a focus on quality customer service and contract management.
Ricci Peyroux
Queenstown Lakes Area Manager
Ricci’s role is to manage Smart’s business interests in Queenstown Lakes District. He has a background of over 20 years’ experience in manufacturing and operations management with Fletchers and Carter Holt. In the past 10 years he has been involved with the waste and recycling industry, ranging from contract management of kerbside collections to managing a state of the art materials recovery facility, and was a member of the packaging forum. Ricci also supports business marketing and sales activities within Smart Environmental’s national commercial divisions.
